Rather than committing to one supplier and building a house style around it, the bar buys from the roasteries it rates and swaps them out on a fast cycle — the espresso lasts around ten days before it changes, the filter often only a few. Over the years that rotation has taken in the names that define British and European specialty roasting, alongside Berlin’s most influential roastery, which is a reasonable indication of the standard being aimed at.

The practical effect on a customer is that Faculty is not a place with a signature drink. It is a place with a signature approach. Two visits a month apart will give you two different espressos, and if you drink filter the difference will be bigger still. That is the point: the bar is essentially curating a tasting programme on your behalf, and if you go regularly you end up drinking your way through the interesting end of the roasting world without ever having to buy twelve bags yourself. The counter is set up to explain what is on, and there are stools at the brew bar for people who want to watch a pour-over being made and ask what they are drinking.

Tea gets the same seriousness, which is rarer than it should be. This is a coffee and tea shop by its own description, with a loose-leaf selection rather than a compromise, and it is the reason the room works for a pair where only one person drinks coffee. Retail is the third leg: bags of the roasts they serve and home brewing equipment are sold across the counter, so the entire chain from tasting something to making it at home happens in one small unit.

Who’s behind it

Faculty was opened by Geoff Lam and his wife Lucy in the Piccadilly Arcade, the business dating itself to 2013 and trading in earnest from early 2014. Geoff had run a coffee bar in the city before this one, so it was not a first attempt, and the pair started in a single small unit; about eighteen months in they took the unit next door and expanded into it, which is how the coffee side and the kitchen side came to share one entrance while remaining distinct operations.

Lucy’s bakery occupies that second half, and it is the reason the food here is made rather than bought. In practice a visitor sees one room; underneath, it is two businesses run by one couple, which is a much better arrangement for a customer than the usual café-plus-wholesale-pastry-van compromise.

The most telling thing either of them has said publicly is not about coffee at all. Asked about the decision to commit to another decade in the arcade, Geoff talked about knowing so many customers by name that they had become friends. A ten-year lease signed by an independent in a city-centre arcade after the hardest years the trade has had is not a marketing gesture; it is a statement about where these two intend to be.

What it’s for

This is a room for a focused coffee visit rather than a long encampment, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a great hour and a frustrating afternoon.

Coming alone for the coffee is what it does best. The stools at the brew bar exist precisely for this: you sit, you watch the pour-over being built, you ask what the filter is this week, and you get an answer from someone who chose it. For anyone who actually cares what is in the cup, that is a far better use of forty minutes than a large room with a comfortable sofa.

Working with a laptop needs a caveat, and it is an honest one. There is Wi-Fi, but power sockets have historically not been part of the offer here — this is a compact arcade unit, not a co-working space, and the layout is built around the counter and the brew bar rather than around chargers. Come with a full battery and a defined task and it works well; plan a six-hour session and you will be hunting for a plug that may not exist. Confirm on arrival rather than assuming, and if you need to be plugged in all afternoon there are much larger rooms two minutes away.

Meeting someone works nicely, particularly if you are meeting a stranger or someone arriving by train — being a minute from the main station makes it one of the most practical rendezvous points in Birmingham. And for takeaway it is efficient, with the added advantage that what you carry out came from the bakery next door rather than a crate.

The space

The arcade does half the work. Piccadilly Arcade dates from 1910 and is one of the handsome glazed shopping passages that survive in the centre of Birmingham, lined with small independents, and Faculty sits inside it rather than facing a street — which means no traffic noise, natural light through the arcade roof, and a completely different feeling from a café on a main road.

Inside, the room has been refined over the years from its original wood-and-whitewash look into something more considered: a deep green counter with art deco lines, marble-topped tables, exposed brick behind. It is a small space and it feels small — two rows of seating, a few stools at the brew bar where you can watch the coffee being made, and additional bench seating out in the arcade for when the inside is full. That bench overflow matters more than it sounds, because it doubles the effective capacity on a busy morning.

Being honest about the constraint: this is not a room to bring six people to, and at peak it fills. The compensation is that a room this size is never anonymous — the counter can see every table, which is exactly why the owners ended up on first-name terms with half the arcade.

Beyond coffee

The food is the second business in the same space, run by the same family, and it changes what the café is capable of. There is breakfast, there is lunch, there are sandwiches and cakes and something more substantial depending on the day — all made in the attached kitchen and bakery rather than delivered in a van at dawn. For a unit this small that is genuinely unusual; most compact city-centre coffee bars solve food with a wholesale contract and a display cabinet.

The reason to mention it is scheduling rather than appetite. Because the kitchen is real, this works as a proper lunch stop and not only as a coffee stop, which for anyone with an hour between trains is the whole difference. And because the two businesses share an entrance, you order what you want and it arrives at the same table without you having to work out which counter is which.

When to come

The rhythm is set by the station a minute away and by the offices around the arcade. Early on, the trade is commuters and people heading to work, and the room turns over quickly. The middle of the day is the peak, when the kitchen is at full tilt and the inside tables and the arcade benches are all in use.

The best window for the visit this place rewards — sitting at the brew bar, asking what the filter is, taking your time — is the stretch after the lunch rush has broken. The room quietens, the queue disappears, and the bar has time to talk. Weekends run to a different and shorter shape: the arcade draws shoppers rather than commuters, the mood is slower, and the day ends earlier than it does midweek. Take the actual opening times from the card on this page, because a small independent adjusts them and no description stays accurate for long.

Getting there

This is as central as Birmingham gets. Faculty is inside the Piccadilly Arcade, the glazed passage that cuts through the block just north of the main station — from the station concourse it is a walk of under a minute, which is why the bar won an award for being the best coffee stop near a railway station. If you are coming out of the shopping centre above the platforms, aim for the arcade entrance and keep going until the shopfronts appear on both sides.

Everything else is walkable from there: Moor Street station is a few minutes east, Snow Hill a few minutes north, and the Metro tram runs through the middle of the centre nearby. Driving makes no sense at all here — the surrounding streets are pedestrianised or bus-gated, the clean air zone applies, and the arcade has no parking of its own.

Good to know

Ask what is on before you order. The espresso and the filter both change on a fast cycle, so the answer is different every time, and the people behind the counter are the ones who chose it. If you tell them what you normally like, you will get a better recommendation here than you will get almost anywhere else in the city.

Plan around power rather than hoping. Wi-Fi is available; sockets have historically not been. That single detail decides whether this is the right room for your afternoon, and it is worth checking rather than discovering.

Two more practical notes. The space is small, so at the busiest hour you may end up on the bench out in the arcade — which is a perfectly good place to sit, but it is outdoors in the sense that arcades are. And if you want to keep drinking what you had, the retail shelf carries the roasts they serve plus brewing equipment, which makes this one of the better places in the centre to start buying coffee for home without ordering blind on the internet.

Questions and answers

Does Faculty roast its own coffee?

No. It is a multi-roaster bar that buys from a rotating cast of outstanding roasteries, changing the espresso around every ten days and the filter every few days.

Is there anywhere to plug in a laptop?

Historically power sockets have not been part of the offer, though there is Wi-Fi. Treat it as a place for a focused hour rather than a full working day, and check on arrival if being plugged in matters to you.

Who owns it?

Geoff and Lucy Lam. Geoff had run a coffee bar in the city before opening this one; Lucy runs the bakery and kitchen in the adjoining unit, which supplies the food.

How long has it been there?

The business dates itself to 2013 and has traded in the arcade ever since, expanding into the neighbouring unit about eighteen months in. The owners have since committed to a further ten-year lease.

Is the food made on site?

Yes — it comes from the bakery and kitchen in the attached unit run by the same family, rather than from a wholesale supplier. Breakfast, lunch, sandwiches and cakes are all covered.

Is it good for tea drinkers?

Unusually so. It describes itself as a coffee and tea shop and keeps a loose-leaf selection, which makes it a comfortable choice when only one person at the table wants coffee.

How close is it to the station?

Under a minute’s walk from the main station concourse — close enough that the bar has been recognised nationally as a coffee stop by a railway station. Moor Street and Snow Hill stations are both a few minutes away.

Can I buy beans and equipment?

Yes. The retail shelf carries bags of the roasts being served plus home brewing kit, which is the simplest way to keep drinking what you tasted.

Is it big enough for a group?

Not really.
