Ten restaurants held together less by cuisine than by one map: the city centre end to end, most of it a few minutes apart on foot. They also share a rhythm — every kitchen here takes orders into the late evening, and every one works on a Sunday. The line runs from the canal side at Brindleyplace, where Turtle Bay Brindleyplace Birmingham and Piccolino Birmingham sit, past Chamberlain Square with Dishoom Birmingham and La Bellezza Birmingham, and on to the shopping crowds around the Bullring.
Choose by the room as much as by the menu. La Bellezza Birmingham and Tattu Birmingham are built to be looked at, and in both the setting is half the occasion. Piccolino Birmingham and Gusto Italian – Birmingham are the calmer Italians, candlelight and an unhurried pace; at La Bellezza Birmingham and Piccolino Birmingham alike a table is worth booking ahead. Fat Hippo Birmingham and Banana Tree Birmingham Bullring ask nothing of you but an appetite. The Ivy Temple Row holds the British corner, and Dishoom Birmingham opens in the morning and carries straight through to a late dinner.

A large group is easiest at Banana Tree Birmingham Bullring, where the room spreads over two floors and the dishes are meant for sharing, or at Turtle Bay Birmingham, which turns dinner into a party as the evening goes on. With children, Fat Hippo Birmingham is the plain answer — a kids’ menu and no ceremony. For a terrace, Piccolino Birmingham keeps its own usable all year under a retractable roof, La Bellezza Birmingham looks out over Chamberlain Square, and Turtle Bay Brindleyplace Birmingham drifts towards the water in warm weather. All of them will seat you late.
Be clear about what this ten is not. It is central from end to end — nothing out in the residential neighbourhoods. Italy takes three of the places and the same Caribbean name appears twice, while only The Ivy Temple Row cooks British. Nothing here runs around the clock. Vegan and gluten-free eating is handled inside these menus — at Fat Hippo Birmingham or Banana Tree Birmingham Bullring — not by a kitchen devoted to it.
